The Best Brains Won't Solve Energy Problems
*Source: The Hill* Dr. Arun Majumdar, the Energy Department official who oversees the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, allowed the public an interesting peek into his mind. Majumdar, who is also President Obama's nominee for undersecretary of Energy, says in an interview that there's good news and bad: The United States still has the "best brains" in science and engineering, but that's not enough to solve the nation's energy problems. In the End: FY 2012 Appropriations
*Source: The AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News* The FY 2012 appropriations cycle concluded on December 23 when President Obama signed into law the second of two large appropriations measures. The two measures combined all of the FY 2012 appropriations bills. Here is a compilation of percentage changes in budgets between FY 2011 appropriations levels and the FY 2012 outcome.
Firms Unite to Form Red Chair Architects
*Source: Mary Beth West Consulting* Knoxville-based Cockrill Design & Planning and Community Tectonics announced the merger of their firms to form Red Chair Architects. The new firm begins as one of the largest and most comprehensive design practices in the region. Both firms have been recognized for excellence in design and planning during their combined 90 years of practice throughout Middle and East Tennessee. Click here to watch the announcement video. ETEC: New Year, New Role		More News?
Lindsey Twardy, program director for the East Tennessee Economic Council since 2009, was named ETEC's Vice President in an action taken by the Council's executive committee in December. "Lindsey has a great work ethic, and takes a great deal of pride in the quality of her work," said ETEC President Jim Campbell. "This past year she led us to record setting membership revenues, and managed our communications infrastructure without a hitch. She was part of a winning grant proposal team with our partners at UT and Roane State, and supported ORNL and Y-12 events. She is a key element to our organizational success." The executive committee feels that the new title more clearly reflects her role. Lindsey, a Knoxville native, joined ETEC after working in various media and event management positions in London and Los Angeles.
