Y-12 National Security Complex
Darrel Kohlhorst was named president and general manager of the Y-12 National Security Complex in February 2008. He is responsible for operation of the site, which includes manufacture of nuclear weapons components, special materials storage, nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, engineering, safety, security, quality, and environmental protection.
His first association with Y-12 was in 2000, when he joined the B&W Y-12 transition team. In 2001 he was named deputy manager for Manufacturing, and in 2003, he became division manager for Manufacturing. Before his current position he served as deputy general manager for Operations and as senior vice president and chief operating officer for Y-12.
Kohlhorst joined Babcock and Wilcox in 1972 at the Nuclear Products Division (NPD) in Lynchburg, Virginia. During his career at NPD from 1972 to 1990, he held numerous technical and business management positions, including project manager and manager of Engineering. He moved to the Corporate Research and Development Division in 1990 and was responsible for technology applications throughout the corporation and the Exploratory Research Program. In 1992, he joined the Manufactured System and Technology Division as general manager, with responsibilities for Engineering Research, Inc., OSO, and CIMS Engineering.
A native of Lima, Ohio, Kohlhorst holds a B.S. in aeronautical engineering from Ohio State University and a master's of engineering in applied mechanics from the University of Virginia. He attended the executive M.B.A. program at Northeastern University.
Steve Little
Vice President, Facilities, Infrastructure, and Services
Y-12 National Security Complex
As vice president, Facilities, Infrastructure, and Services, Steve Little is responsible for all aspects of facilities manage¬ment and maintenance at the Y-12 National Security Com¬plex, covering more than 5 million square feet with a work force of 900 people. He also is responsible for utilities, roads and grounds, and all services in support of the 300-building site.
Since joining Y-12 in 2004, Little has developed and imple¬mented numerous productivity improvements in mainte¬nance execution, work control, and reliability-centered main¬tenance, which have resulted in a cost avoidance of several million dollars while simultaneously improving the reliability of mission critical systems and components.
He has more than 25 years' experience in nuclear operations and maintenance, both in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear security enterprise and U.S. Navy. His man¬agement and design work includes development and imple¬mentation of complex maintenance management programs and integrated work control programs at five major DOE sites.
Little is a recognized expert in facilities management, main¬tenance management, conduct of operations, real property management, Integrated Safety Management, nuclear facility training, and Enhanced Work Planning programs.
Before his DOE positions, Little spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy's nuclear program as a machinist mate. He was the nuclear quality assurance supervisor onboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), where he structured and implemented a ship-wide reorganization of the nuclear qual¬ity assurance program. He served as assistant plant leading mechanic and instructor at the Idaho Naval Reactors Facility and was the leading petty officer and work center supervisor on board the USS Long Beach (CGN-9).
He holds a B.S. from University of the State of New York in liberal studies with emphasis in engineering technology, and he is a certified maintenance and reliability professional.
