Lieutenant General Robert G. Gard, Jr. and Colonel William Hauser speak at ETEC on April 17

“The U.S. and Iran:  A Troubled History Does Not Have to Equal a Disastrous Future”

ETEC will host Gen. Robert Gard and Col. William Hauser from the Center for Arms Control on April 17 at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce from 5 p.m.-6 p.m. Join us for a cocktail hour and hear from two former military commanders as they review the troubled history of U.S.- Iran relations.  From a discussion of Middle East policy to the way forward in Iraq, including the nuclear weapons issue, this should prove to be a fascinating talk.

Col Hauser specializes in military/civilian issues.  He retired from Pfizer, Inc., following a career as a US Army officer in U.S., Germany, Korea and Vietnam. A graduate of West Point, Col. Hauser served as research fellow at John Hopkins University and is the author on numerous articles and a book, America’s Army in Crisis (Johns Hopkins, 1973.)

ETEC Hosts SGPB’s 2008 Forum on Youth Development

Students from Roane State, Oak Ridge High School as well as representatives of city and community organizations partnered with the Southern Growth Policy Board to discuss “youth and the future of the South.”

ETEC hosted the event with the University of Tennessee Institute for Public Service at the UT Outreach Center in Oak Ridge Tuesday afternoon. Gary Goff, Roane State President, also attended as well as Wayne Stevenson from ORAU, Lila Metcalf of Oak Ridge Education Foundation, Robin Biloski of Anderson County Commission, Barry Stephenson (MCLInc) and ORHS administrator Karla Mullins.

This year the focus of the SGPB is on Youth Development - how to strengthen and capture the vision, talents, and passion of youth, the real future of the South.  The students provided valuable and unique input that reflected their experience of growing up in Oak Ridge, their awareness of opportunities to get engaged and they suggested ways to make the community more “youth friendly.” They also expressed the need for one source of information that lists volunteer opportunities in Oak Ridge and makes it easier for the youth to learn about ways to get involved.

Community forums will be held throughout 13 Southern states to gather input and ideas related to youth development.  This input will be used to develop the SGPB 2008 Report on the Future of the South, which will be published in June 2008. More information about SGPB and the community forums can be found at www.southern.org
