Nuclear Company – BWXT

BWXT has a major and expanding nuclear presence in East Tennessee, employing more than 1,300 people now, and many more in the future.

Erwin (Unicoi County): BWXT subsidiary Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) in Erwin is the leading manufacturer of fuel material for all naval nuclear reactors used in U.S. submarines and aircraft carries. NFS is the largest employer in the county. BWXT recently announced it will locate a new defense fuels enrichment facility adjacent to NFS that will bring an additional 100 jobs to Erwin.

Jonesborough (Washington County): In 2025, BWXT acquired L3Harris’ Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee business, renaming it BWXT Ordnance Tennessee. Specializing in work with depleted uranium, BWXT is constructing two new facilities to process high purity depleted uranium for the federal government as part of a $1.6 billion contract from the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Oak Ridge (Roane County): In January 2026, BWXT opened its Centrifuge Manufacturing Development Facility in Oak Ridge. This project, utilizing centrifuge technology from Oak Ridge National Lab (DUECE) will support domestic uranium enrichment for the NNSA, creating high-tech jobs. Further development in support of the program will unfold over the next decade, bringing additional jobs to the area.
